DANGAL REVIEW & TOP 10 MOVIES OF 2016
Rating- 4/5
An almost flawless film by Nitesh Tiwari, clearly superior to other sports film made this year, “Dangal” gets the technical aspect of the sport on point, setting an example, unlike M.S.Dhoni- The Untold Story. After “Pink”, we have yet another winner that ends the year 2016 on a high note. "Dangal" takes off like a rocket and never ever slows it’s pace down, it’s like stock hitting continuous upper circuits.
Nitesh Tiwari sets the mood straight away into the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat (Amir Khan), showcasing his passion for wrestling. Phogat takes on the arrogant district level winner in style, in his office, followed by an intelligent commentary voice over on T.V. “Dangal” is an outright winner because it has a tight story line, and has got equally competent actors to back it up. It’s extremely hard to find any flaws in the direction department, while some can argue about it’s length but I feel it editing and screenplay was absolutely crisp and sharp.
When Neeraj Pandey lost the plot in M.S.Dhoni, by missing out the important details of the game, it was an opportunity lost to turn a good film into a great film. "Dangal" pounces upon the opportunity to make this a film to be remembered by hitting all the important notes of wrestling, the technicality of the sport is superbly executed. Mahavir Singh Phogat (Aamir Khan) a national level wrestler, father of four daughters, lost his hope of winning a gold medal for his country, not being greeted by a son who could fullfill his wish. However it took him some time to realize, “Gold to gold hota hai, choral lawe ki chori”. He starts the most intensive training of both his both daughter Geeta Phogat (Fatima Sheikh and Zaira Wasim) and Babita Phogat (Sanya Malhotra and Shivani Bhatnagar).
Music by Preetam is top notch with tracks like Dangal, dangal, Haanikarak Bapu and Dhakkad Girls suiting the flowing narrative of the movie, the music is as raw as the narrative.
Amazing lyrics penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya
“Maa ke pet se, marghat tak,
Hai teri kahaani pagh pagh pyaare”
“Soote jaagte choot rahi hai,
Aanshu ki pichkari,
Phir bhi khush na hua mogambo,
Hum tere balihari”
Mukesh Chabbra has done a tremendous job in casting department, each and every character is well thought out and worth it. The younger girls Geeta and Babita are so natural and talented, with their raw Haryanvi accent they will floor you with their acting and dialogue delivery. While watching Dangal you never feel you are watching new comers, you just feel they are seasoned actors with excellent training in wrestling. The wrestling moves are so well choreographed, they feel real and are done with such finesse, it is hard to believe the attention to detail in this movie. Several stand out moments in the movie which give you goosebumps, one being the fight between the father and daughter, to prove whose technique has better chance of winning the gold medal. It’s incredible how Aamir Khan executed the role of a father, gasping for breath as he is old enough but not weak mentally, he continues to fight his daughter, in a stellar scene. Daya kaur played by Sakshi Tanwar provides the much needed care of mother towards her children, she is always a good actress. Aamir Khan, is a magician, he plays the ruthless coach while training his girls, and a caring father when he presses their feet while sleeping, without their knowledge, the only time he can express his love towards his daughters. He makes them tough, hard, independent, ready to fight every hard ship in life. Inspite of brilliant performances by all the Dhakaad Girls, Aamir stands on his own, his nuanced performance is a live example why he is rated the best.
However post intermission, Nitesh Tiwari’s direction focuses more on technicality of the sport. How a father guides his daughter from the evil claws of the national coach played by Girish Kulkarni. Aamir guides Geeta through her matches by studying his techniques, and letting her know when to attack and when to defend. In the Semi Final match he advised Geeta to play defensive so that she can make the opponent commit the mistake, master stroke.
With a twist in the end, Nitesh Tiwari brings an element of suspense as well as fiction, to this true incident based narrative, Aamir stands up to the national anthem of India and so does every person in the theater. It is the highest point of the movie and it finishes off in style, a standing ovation and a grand salute for all the cast and crew of movie “Dangal”. Music, Story, Action, Dialogue, Screenplay, Cinematography, direction and lyrics are top notch. It’s time to forget demonetisation and catch Dangal, an inspiring, high spirited movie.
